Museum

National Museum, Maldives
The very first museum of Maldives, National Museum was established in 1952 on the National Day of Maldives, to preserve and display the history of this minuscule island nation in the Indian Ocean. The museum exhibits a rather significant collection of historical artefacts and royal antiquities ranging from the Buddhist era to Muslim monarchs.
This museum on the island of Malé is located in Sultan Park, which was previously the site of the 17th-century Royal Palace of Maldives. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Maldives currently administers the museum. The old three-storied museum building is located in Sultan Park in Malé. The newly renovated whitewashed building of the National Museum is also in Sultan Park. The interior of the new building retains the charm of the days of the Sultanate and the handwritten Quran is engraved on the walls.
Sultan Park and National Museum
The only thing that remains of the 16th-century Royal Palace is Sultan Park. Sultan Park is Public Park that stands as a testimony to the Palace’s majestic. The Royal Palace was razed to the ground except for one three-storey wing. A massive iron gate at the entrance speaks of its former glory. Water Lilies and serene ponds welcome you to this green oasis. A welcome change from the chaos of the city, if you listen carefully, you could actually hear birdsongs in this place. The remnant wing of the palace has been converted into the National Museum which houses artefacts of Maldivian culture, including coins, royal antiques, furniture, coins, embellishments and armaments. A visit to this museum is a must for history lovers.
